HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

DEGREE: Associate in Health Science

To provide quality HIM graduates in response to the educational, economic, and area health care delivery system needs.

HIM specialists assemble patient’s health information by ensuring all forms are properly signed and completed per hospital policy, regulatory and accrediting body organizations. They regularly communicate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to clarify information regarding diagnoses so they may code and bill correctly. HIM specialists use computer programs to tabulate and analyze data to help improve patient care, costs, for legal actions, in response to surveys, and for use in research studies. This is one of the few positions in healthcare that require little or no direct patient contact. HIM specialists may be employed by the HIM department of any healthcare facility as well as by cancer registry, utilization review, and quality improvement departments.

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics 2005 Occupational Outlook Handbook, the median annual earnings income is about $25,000. According to salary.com, for the Pee Dee area, the median salary is $43,148 annually. The projected job growth rate for HIM is 36% over the next decade.
