We are committed to creating fast-track educational opportunities for high school students interested in getting a head start on their careers or college experience. Our Early College Academy program gives high school students a chance to eliminate two years of college and enter a 4-year college or university as an academic Junior. Not to mention, minimizing two years of accumulated debt!

How do I qualify for Early College Academy?

  • Be a rising or current 9th or 10th grade student
  • Attend a school within Florence, Darlington, or Marion County, or Homeschool
  • School and Parent Approval

Step 2: We Need a Few Things From You

1. Test Scores:  All Early College Academy applicants are required to take our Accuplacer Placement Test.

Information about the Accuplacer Placement Test:

  • Students are allowed a maximum of 3 attempts per years. The first attempt is free. For retesting, students must pay $10 and wait 14 days before retesting.
  • The test is untimed- Take the time that you need to do your best!
  • Students must show a photo ID prior to taking the test. If you do not have a photo ID, please complete this form.
  • Students are required to take the Reading and Writing portions of the test only. The math portion is optional.
  • Students may test at any of our campus or online. Speak to your high school counselor first. We may already be coming to your school to administer the test!

General Education Pathway:

  • Students with an overall high school GPA of 3.0 or higher will be awarded waiver scores for general education (non-math) courses and will not need to take the Accuplacer test.
  • Students who have earned “B” average or better in Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry will also be awarded math waiver scores for entry into college-level math courses.

Technical Pathway:

  • Students with an overall high school GPA of 2.5 or higher will be awarded waiver scores for technical education courses and will not need to take the Accuplacer test.

2. Forms: Submit the following documents to DualEnrollment@fdtc.edu

  • Permission/Communication Form
    • This form allows us to communicate with your school and your parent/guardian.
  • Citizenship Form
    • This form certifies your legal presence in the United States.
  • Lottery Form
    • This form allows us to apply Lottery Funding to your account. Students must enroll in at least 6 credit hours to receive Lottery Funding. You will complete this form at the start of each academic year. This signature on this form must be handwritten. 
  • Workforce Affidavit Form
    • This form allows us to apply Workforce Funding to your account. The signature on this form must be handwritten. 

3. Identification: Submit one of the following items to DualEnrollment@fdtc.edu

  • Driver’s License
  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport

4. Transcript: Current 9thor 10th graders- Ask your school counselor or homeschool designee to submit your high school transcript to DualEnrollment@fdtc.edu.

Step 3: Access Your New Accounts

It's now time to access your student email, myFDTC Self-Service, and your Desire2Learn(D2L) accounts. 

We will be sending you all the directions you need to access these accounts. You should receive this information the following business day through email after submitting your application.

If you have any trouble accessing these accounts once you have received your sign in information, access this support page or reach out to our IT Help Desk at 843.661.8123 or helpdesk.account@fdtc.edu and they will make sure you can get in.

Online courses are taught through Desire2Learn (D2L). Learn how to use D2L here!

Step 4: Register for Courses

Once accepted, speak with your high school counselor about your acceptance to FDTC’s Dual Enrollment program. Your high school counselor will work with you to help you select courses that are most appropriate for your high school track. Your high school counselor will send us your registration requests!

Homeschool students: Complete a Registration Form and return it to DualEnrollment@fdtc.edu

Step 5: Student Handbook

After being accepted to FDTC please download and review the FDTC Student Handbook.

Step 6: Student ID

You will need a Photo ID for our online courses. You can pick up a free Student ID at the front desk of the 100 Building on our Main Campus.

Returning Students

Step 1: We Need a Few Things From You

Complete Forms 

Register for classes by completing the Registration Form and emailing it to DualEnrollment@fdtc.edu or submitting it in person. If your high school submits a fall or spring registration roster, please contact your high school's Dual Enrollment or Early College counselor.

Choose Your Pathway

We offer a variety of pathways for high school students through our Early College Academy. These pathways are meant to be taken alongside a high school student’s normal coursework required for high school graduation.

All course layouts are recommended but not required unless otherwise stated, as some courses are only offered during certain terms. Students may change the order of courses as long as all prerequisites are met.

Dual Enrollment FAQs:

What will my classes be like?
  • You can choose online or lecture classes
  • Your lecture classes will be taught at FDTC
  • Online courses will require you to come to FDTC for exams and tests
  • Courses are taught in 8-week, 12-week, and 15-week sessions
  • Rigorous coursework and a college experience designed to prepare high school students for the expectations of college
Will my classes transfer to another college?

Yes! Check out the South Carolina Transfer and Articulation Center to see a current list of FDTC courses that will transfer to any public college or university in South Carolina.

What about tuition, fees, and books?
  • Depending on residency status, students may be eligible for SC WINS and South Carolina Lottery Tuition Assistance. Students must enroll in at least 6 credit hours in order to receive South Carolina Lottery Tuition Assistance. These funds will cover a portion of the tuition cost for the courses taught by FDTC.
  • Standard FDTC tuition rates and fees apply to Dual Enrollment/Early College Students
  • All students are responsible for obtaining the required textbooks and supplies for all FDTC courses 
  • Your school district may assist with the cost of your tuition. Contact DualEnrollment@fdtc.edu or your school counselor to learn if your school district helps pay for your Dual Enrollment classes.
Withdrawing from a course?
  • Click here to view the Line Schedule for the current semester. Be aware of drop dates for refunds and for dropping courses without Academic Penalty. 
  • If you are considering withdrawing from a course:
    • First Step: Speak with your high school counselor and your parent about whether withdrawing is the right choice for you. Your counselor will advise you on whether or not the course is needed for high school graduation.
    • Second Step: Contact DualEnrollment@fdtc.edu. Dual Enrollment will verify with your high school and will withdraw you from the course. 
  • Withdrawing from a course can jeopardize your financial aid, high school graduation, and your ability to remain in the Dual Enrollment program. We are here to assist you if you feel that you need to be withdrawn.
