GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Devin Mitchell's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning provided the go-ahead run for Florence-Darlington Technical College, and closer Derek Duval made it hold up in the ninth Monday in the Stingers' 9-8 victory ove

The victory in Game 9 of the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series pushed the Stingers (53-10, 2-0 JUCO) deeper in the championship bracket, facing Blinn College at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The Coyotes (52-11, 1-1 JUCO) face an elimination game at 10 a.m. Tuesday against Crowder College.

A four-run eighth inning by Flo-Dar started with back-to-back singles by Mac James and Michael Gibson. Jay Douglas drew a walk to load the bases and bring Tyler Ray out of the bullpen. Josh Campos lifted a sacrifice fly to center and Ethan Plyler followed with a two-run single to right, tying the game at 8-8.

An infield single put Plyler at third for Mitchell's key fly ball.

Duval retired the Coyotes in order to pick up the save. Mike Joyce, the third of four Flo-Dar pitchers, got the win, with 2.1 shutout innings.

Southern Nevada got a three-run home run from Tyman Long in the third inning after the Stingers' Zack Hunt hit a solo shot in the bottom of the second.

Mitchell doubled and scored in the fourth to make it 3-2, but Southern Nevada scored twice in the fifth and three times in the sixth, with Jet Gilliam hitting a two-run home run to center.

Florence-Darlington responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, again with Mitchell getting it going with a leadoff infield single. James drove in a pair of runs with a double to left-center and another run came home on a groundout by Douglas, keeping the Stingers within striking distance for their eighth-inning thriller.
