McCall’s Supply donates Commercial Gas Heating Units to FDTC HVAC Program
The HVAC program at Florence-Darlington Technical College (FDTC) has received a significant equipment donation from McCall’s Supply, Inc., which recently contributed two commercial gas heating units valued at approximately $10,000 to support hands-on student learning.
According to Raymond A. Rollins, Director of Marketing and Advertising with McCall’s Supply, Inc., the donated 5-ton commercial gas packs were storm-damaged units that, while fully functional, could not be sold.
“Students can get experience working on commercial systems, since a significant number of commercial HVAC equipment is gas. We at McCall’s are truly thankful that these could be put to good use,” he said.
Rather than scrapping the equipment, McCall’s Supply chose to donate the units to FDTC, turning otherwise unsellable equipment into a valuable instructional resource. Although the units have cosmetic damage, they are fully operational and well-suited for classroom and lab instruction.
Because the units are commercial in scale, students are able to work with equipment that differs significantly in size, layout, and complexity from residential systems. The donation allows instructors to demonstrate gas heat operation, system components, airflow, and safety controls in a real-world commercial application. Since the units are not placed into active service, students can fully disassemble, inspect, troubleshoot, and rebuild the systems—providing hands-on experience that closely mirrors field conditions.
“These units give our students an opportunity to gain experience with commercial gas heating equipment in a safe, controlled learning environment,” Matthew Lewis, FDTC HVAC Program Director, said. “That type of exposure is critical for students preparing to enter today’s HVAC workforce.”
FDTC is grateful to McCall’s Supply for their continued support of technical education and for helping prepare the next generation of skilled HVAC technicians through meaningful, hands-on learning opportunities.
